Rainbow Elders Presents: Community Planning Meeting

Please join us for an afternoon of conversation to help inform programming and initiatives for older adults in our community. In particular, we encourage anyone who has been part of the Rainbow Elders advisory group, has participated in programming, or who wants to get involved.
Our vision for our Community Planning Meeting is a warm and welcoming space for community members to share their feedback with facilitators. We will provide prompts to generate conversation and moderate a generous opening and closing of our time together, as well as end our time with intention for next steps. Our primary focus will be preparing an accessible float for the Pride PEI parade and organizing community events for the Summer. Rainbow Elders is a growing community of 2SLGBTQIA+ folks aged 50+ who are coming together to connect, celebrate, and create space for aging with pride.

Whether you’ve been out for decades or are just beginning to explore your identity later in life, Rainbow Elders is here to honour your journey. We host social events, community consultations, and opportunities to shape programming that reflects your needs, interests, and lived experiences.

The name Rainbow Elders was chosen by community members themselves — while some have raised concerns about the term “elder” being reserved for Indigenous communities, it’s important to note that “elder” is actually an English word — not an Indigenous one.

Many Indigenous nations have their own distinct and sacred terms, teachings, and roles for those who carry knowledge and cultural responsibility. “Elder” is a colonial, anglicized label that’s been broadly applied across institutions — and while it has been used to describe respected Indigenous knowledge keepers, it doesn’t originate from Indigenous languages or traditions.

In 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, “Elder” has long been used to honour our trailblazers — those who’ve survived, resisted, and created space for the rest of us. The name Rainbow Elders reflects a deep respect for that legacy and a desire to build connection across generations with pride, joy, and care.
